We use themes to reach out and gather diverse insights on one subject matter at a time.
Our 2012 theme is judgment. How the views and rules of other affects our lives and the decisions we make.
This year our Short Cutz Series will present a night of one acts by award winning playwright, author and psychologist, Paula J. Caplan. The three plays we chose show a varying perspective on how psychological labeling has effected numerous sectors of our society. These plays create an emotionally evocative and personal response. WHAT MOMMY TOLD ME: a young mother diagnosed with a mental illness looses custody of her child to an abusive husband. THE TEST (Samuel French award winner) tells the story of a young man with mild retardation on death row. WAR & THERAPY: a female soldier seeking help from a well meaning therapist to survive the struggles of coming home after war discovers that it is not a therapist, but the world she is so afraid of that will save her.
Our staged reading events allow us a broader scope. We produce readings of mainly new plays with one classic piece, based on a broader theme. We have added the classical element this year as a way to reflect and acknowledge where we came from and why some plays resonate over time. At one time it too was a new play. Our interaction with the audience begins with an opening reception. We have a performance and interactive discussion, then end with a social reception that includes the company and artists involved.
